Chefchaouen: The Blue Town of the Rif

Lanes washed in every shade of blue, tiled fountains and mountain air: a small, calm town in the Rif that slows everyone down.

Destination overview

The Essence of Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 as a mountain stronghold and was settled soon afterwards by Muslim and Jewish families arriving from Andalusia. Their legacy is a compact medina of steep stepped lanes, tiled doorways and small squares, painted in the blues that have made the town famous. At its centre is Plaza Uta el-Hammam, with café terraces facing the red walls of the kasbah.

It is a town for walking without a plan: every corner is a photograph, shops sell woven blankets and local goat cheese, and the pace is noticeably gentler than in the big cities. A short path leads up to the Spanish Mosque for the classic view over the rooftops at sunset, and the surrounding Rif mountains offer good hiking. Chefchaouen fits naturally between Tangier and Fes on a tour of the north.

Frequently asked questions

Chefchaouen Travel Guide: Frequently Asked Questions

View All FAQs
How many days should I spend in Chefchaouen?

One night is enough to see the medina, the kasbah and the sunset from the Spanish Mosque. A second night lets you walk in the Rif or simply enjoy the town at its quietest, early and late.

What is the best time to visit Chefchaouen?

April to June and September to October. Summer is busier but rarely too hot thanks to the altitude, and from November to March you should expect cold nights and rain.

Why is Chefchaouen blue?

There is no single agreed answer. The tradition is often linked to the Jewish families who settled here, for whom blue recalled the sky and heaven; others say it keeps houses cool or deters mosquitoes. Today residents repaint every spring.

How do I get to Chefchaouen?

There is no airport or railway. The town is reached by road: about two hours from Tangier and three and a half from Fes. On our tours you arrive in a private vehicle and walk into the medina with your driver-guide.

Is Chefchaouen safe for visitors?

Yes. Chefchaouen is used to welcoming travellers and serious problems are rare. Take the same care you would anywhere: keep valuables out of sight in busy places and agree prices in advance. On a private tour your driver-guide is with you throughout the journey.

Can you include Chefchaouen in a private tour?

Yes. Chefchaouen features in many of our private tours, and every itinerary can be adjusted. Tell us how long you would like to stay and we will build the route around it.
