Good to know
Morocco is one of the most rewarding birding destinations close to Europe. In a single trip you can move from Atlantic lagoons and estuaries to cedar forests, alpine meadows above 2,500 metres, stony steppe and the sand seas of the Sahara, and each of these habitats has its own birds. More than 450 species have been recorded in the country, including North African specialities that are hard or impossible to see anywhere else in the Western Palearctic.
Our birding tours are private: you travel only with your own party, in a vehicle with your own driver-guide, and the day follows the rhythm of the birds rather than a group timetable. We start early, stop wherever there is something to see, rest in the heat of the day and adapt the route to the season, the water levels and the species you most want to find. Every itinerary below is a starting point that we can shorten, extend or combine.
Highlights
Moussier's Redstart, Levaillant's Woodpecker, Black-crowned Tchagra, Atlas Pied Flycatcher and Crimson-winged Finch are among the birds that make Morocco special.
Most of the world's wild Northern Bald Ibises live on the Souss-Massa coast near Agadir, one of the rarest birds of the region.
Around Erg Chebbi you can search for Desert Sparrow, sandgrouse, coursers, Hoopoe-Lark, Pharaoh Eagle-Owl and Egyptian Nightjar.
The Tagdilt track and the Zeida plains are classic sites for Thick-billed, Temminck's and Dupont's Larks and Red-rumped Wheatear.
Alpine meadows at Oukaimeden, juniper slopes on the Tichka pass and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas each hold their own species.
Lagoons such as Merja Zerga and the Souss estuary attract flamingos, spoonbills, waders and gulls, and spring and autumn bring migrants on the move.

Frequently asked questions
March to May is the most popular time, with resident birds singing, breeding plumage and spring migration. Autumn (September to November) is also very good, and winter is excellent for the coast and wetlands. In summer the desert is very hot, so we focus on the mountains.
The wild population lives on the Atlantic coast north and south of Agadir, around Tamri and in the Souss-Massa National Park. Our Souss-Massa and 10-day tours spend time in both areas, always watching the birds from a respectful distance.
All our birdwatching tours are private. You travel only with your own party, choose your dates and can change the pace, the length of the stops and the route.
Our tours include an experienced driver-guide who knows the routes and the classic birding sites. A specialist ornithologist guide is not part of the standard itinerary. If you would like one, tell us when you enquire and we will tell you honestly what we can arrange.
Bring your own binoculars and, if possible, a telescope and tripod, together with a field guide to the birds of Morocco or the Western Palearctic. Good walking shoes, sun protection and warm layers for early mornings are also important.
Yes. Any itinerary can include visits to places such as Ait Ben Haddou, Fes or Marrakech, or a night in a desert camp near Merzouga. Tell us what you have in mind and we will adapt the plan.
The price depends on the number of travellers, the season, the length of the tour and the accommodation you prefer, so we quote each request individually. Send us your dates, group size and target species and we will reply with a detailed proposal.
