Tour overview
A week of birding from Marrakech that crosses three very different worlds: the high meadows of Oukaimeden, the stony lark country of the Tagdilt track and the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Along the way you search for Crimson-winged Finch, Tristram's Warbler, Thick-billed and Temminck's Larks, Desert Sparrow and Pharaoh Eagle-Owl.
Our 7 Day High Atlas and Sahara Birding Tour from Marrakech starts and finishes in Marrakech, covering about 1,390 km by road over seven days. Along the way you will experience the Tizi n'Tichka pass over the High Atlas, the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, a sunset camel trek in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, a night in a desert camp, the desert birds of Erg Chebbi, from Desert Sparrow to Pharaoh Eagle-Owl and the larks and wheatears of the Tagdilt track. Each stop is a real visit on foot, with your driver-guide explaining what you are looking at and local people adding their own stories.
Accommodation is chosen for character and location rather than size: 6 nights in all, in riads and boutique hotels in the medinas and old towns, kasbah-style guesthouses in the southern valleys and one night in a desert camp in the dunes of Erg Chebbi. You travel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle, a 4x4 or a minibus depending on the size of your party, with an English-speaking driver-guide who knows these roads well. Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese-speaking guides are available on request.
It is planned for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers, from keen beginners to experienced listers, and for their travelling companions: days start early and follow the rhythm of the birds, with long stops at the best sites and time to rest in the heat of the day. The longest day on the road is day 6, with 6 hours plus birding stops of driving; every other day is shorter, and all of them are broken up by visits and stops. Like all our tours it is fully private, so the plan below can be lengthened, shortened or rearranged to fit your dates.
Highlights
Detailed itinerary
Your driver-guide collects you early from your riad in Marrakech for a day in the High Atlas. The road follows the Ourika Valley, where walnut and poplar woods hold Levaillant's Woodpecker, African Chaffinch and Moussier's Redstart, before climbing to the plateau of Oukaimeden at about 2,600 metres.
Around the high meadows and boulder fields you look for the specialities of the mountains: Crimson-winged Finch, Alpine and Red-billed Choughs, the Atlas race of Horned Lark, Rock Sparrow and, from spring to late summer, Atlas Wheatear and Water Pipit. Prehistoric rock engravings are scattered among the stones.
In the afternoon you drive back down the valley to Marrakech, with stops for any birds along the way, and return to your riad in the early evening.
Today you cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass. On the way up, the juniper scrub and rocky slopes are the place to look for Tristram's Warbler, Barbary Partridge, Moussier's Redstart and Rock Bunting, with raptors soaring along the ridges.
On the southern side you stop at Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar, where House Buntings and Crag Martins nest among the earthen walls, and the riverbed attracts wagtails and wheatears.
In the late afternoon you visit the shores of the El Mansour Eddahbi reservoir near Ouarzazate, good for Ruddy Shelduck, herons, gulls and waders, before checking in to a kasbah-style hotel.
Heading east, you stop in the palm grove of Skoura, where the gardens and irrigation channels hold Common Bulbul, Laughing Dove, Hoopoe and warblers, and Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters sometimes pass in spring.
After lunch in Boumalne Dades you explore the Tagdilt track, a stony steppe south-east of the town famous among birders for its larks. Thick-billed, Temminck's, Greater and Lesser Short-toed Larks can all be found here, together with Red-rumped Wheatear, Cream-coloured Courser, Black-bellied Sandgrouse and Long-legged Buzzard.
You spend the night in a kasbah-style guesthouse in the Dades Valley, ready for another early start on the plateau.
The morning starts at dawn on the Tagdilt plateau, when the larks are singing and easiest to see. It is also the best time for sandgrouse flying to drink and for Cream-coloured Coursers running between the stones.
Driving east, you stop at the Todra Gorge, where Pale Crag Martins and Rock Doves nest on the cliffs, Blue Rock Thrushes sing from the walls and Bonelli's Eagles sometimes hunt over the canyon.
The road then crosses the hamada past Tinejdad and Erfoud, with stops for Desert, White-crowned and Maghreb Wheatears, and reaches Merzouga in the late afternoon. Here camels are ready to take you over the dunes at sunset to your camp, where dinner is cooked over the campfire and the evening ends with the rhythm of Berber drums. Your bed tonight is in a mid-range luxury desert camp (luxury camp on request).
You are out at dawn among the dunes of Erg Chebbi, when the desert is cool and full of song. Your driver-guide takes you by 4x4 to the tamarisk scrub and palm gardens at the edge of the sand, where Desert Sparrow, Fulvous Babbler and African Desert Warbler live, and to pools where sandgrouse may fly in to drink.
As the morning warms up you move onto the stony hamada, where Greater Hoopoe-Lark displays in spring, Cream-coloured Coursers run between the stones and Bar-tailed Larks feed in the open. The middle of the day is for resting in the shade of your guesthouse.
In the cooler hours of the afternoon you visit rocky outcrops used by the Pharaoh Eagle-Owl, approached quietly so as not to disturb the birds, and from spring to early autumn you wait at dusk for Egyptian Nightjar.
After a final early walk at the edge of the dunes, you head west through Rissani into the Maider, the wide desert basin between the Tafilalet and the Anti-Atlas.
The long road through Alnif and Tazzarine crosses some of the quietest country in Morocco. Stops at acacia-lined wadis and stony plains can produce Desert Lark, Bar-tailed Lark, Brown-necked Raven, Blackstart and Desert Grey Shrike.
By late afternoon you reach Ouarzazate and check in to a kasbah-style hotel for the night.
An early visit to the El Mansour Eddahbi reservoir gives a last chance for Ruddy Shelduck and waterbirds before you turn north towards the mountains.
Crossing the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka, you stop in the scrub and the walnut groves of the northern slopes, where Levaillant's Woodpecker, Tristram's Warbler and Barbary Partridge may be found.
You reach Marrakech in the afternoon and check in to your riad in the medina.
This evening your driver says farewell at your hotel in Marrakech, the final stop of the tour. Airport transfers and extra nights are easy to arrange.
Good to know
Before you go
We collect you from your riad or hotel in Marrakech, or from Menara Airport, at around 8:00 am. In the medina, where cars cannot reach every door, your driver meets you at the nearest gate and helps with luggage.
The tour ends at your accommodation in Marrakech or at Menara Airport. On tours that arrive in the evening, we recommend booking a flight for the following day.
A different start or end point is rarely a problem. Because every tour is private, we can begin in one city and finish in another; tell us where you are staying and we will adapt the route and the quote.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons for this route. Days are warm and clear, nights are mild, and in April and May the valleys of the south are green and the roses of Kalaat M'Gouna are in bloom.
Winter is a good time for the desert if you bring warm clothes: skies are bright and the dunes are quiet, but temperatures after dark can fall to around freezing and the High Atlas passes occasionally close for a few hours after snow. In July and August the Sahara is very hot in the afternoon, so we shift the camel trek later, start driving earlier and can recommend a camp with air-cooled tents.
During Ramadan the tour runs as normal. Some restaurants close during the day in smaller towns, your driver-guide will know where to stop, and evenings are especially lively after sunset.

Our birding tours are private trips with an experienced driver-guide who knows the routes and the classic birding sites. A specialist ornithologist guide is not included in the itinerary. If you would like one for the whole tour or for certain sites, tell us when you enquire and we will tell you honestly what we can arrange.
No one can promise wild birds, but the itinerary is built around the habitats and seasons where these species are regularly found, and we adapt the timing on the ground to give you the best chances.
Yes. The pace includes rests in the middle of the day, and many birding sites are also beautiful places to walk, photograph or simply enjoy. We can add a visit or two for non-birders on request.
March to May and September to November offer the most comfortable temperatures. Winter is clear and quiet but cold at night in the desert; in July and August the Sahara is very hot, and we adjust the timings accordingly.
