Tour overview
A diagonal across Morocco, from the Atlantic beaches to the northern medinas. The route passes Taroudant and the saffron hills of Taliouine, follows the kasbah road to Merzouga for two nights, and climbs through the Middle Atlas to Fes.
Our 5 Day Agadir to Fes Desert Tour begins in Agadir and ends in Fes, covering about 1,290 km by road over five days. Along the way you will experience the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, a sunset camel trek in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, a night in a desert camp, tea with nomad families and Gnawa music in Khamlia, the cedar forests and Barbary macaques of the Middle Atlas and Taroudant and the saffron country of Taliouine. Each stop is a real visit on foot, with your driver-guide explaining what you are looking at and local people adding their own stories.
Accommodation is chosen for character and location rather than size: one night in a riad or boutique hotel in Ouarzazate or Ait Ben Haddou, one night in a kasbah-style guesthouse in the Dades Valley, one night in a desert camp in the dunes of Erg Chebbi and one night in a comfortable hotel in Merzouga. You travel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle, a 4x4 or a minibus depending on the size of your party, with an English-speaking driver-guide who knows these roads well. Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese-speaking guides are available on request.
It suits travellers who have only a few days but still want to reach the real Sahara: couples, friends, solo travellers and families with older children who are comfortable with some time in the car. The longest day on the road is day 5, with 7.5–8 hours of driving; every other day is shorter, and all of them are broken up by visits and stops. Like all our tours it is fully private, so the plan below can be lengthened, shortened or rearranged to fit your dates.
Highlights
Detailed itinerary
Your tour starts in Agadir and heads inland up the Souss Valley to Taroudant, a walled town nicknamed 'little Marrakech'. A short walk along the ochre ramparts and through its souks gives a taste of the south.
The road climbs between the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas to Taliouine, the saffron capital, where a cooperative explains the harvest and serves saffron tea. Further on, Tazenakht is famous for the carpets woven by Ouzguita women.
You reach Ait Ben Haddou in the late afternoon, in time to walk through the ksar before dinner nearby or in Ouarzazate.
A gentle day on the kasbah road. You walk through the palms of Skoura to Kasbah Amridil, one of the best-preserved fortified houses of the south.
In the Valley of Roses, around Kalaat M'Gouna, a cooperative shows you how the spring harvest of Damask roses becomes rosewater, soap and cream.
From Boumalne the road enters the Dades Gorge, with its red cliffs, the Monkey Fingers and a viewpoint above the switchbacks. The night is in a guesthouse beside the river.
After a night in the Dades, a short drive up the gorge shows you the Monkey Fingers before you head east to Tinghir.
In Todra Gorge you walk between towering walls of orange rock, beside a clear stream, before stopping for lunch.
In the afternoon the plateau stretches to Erfoud, and then the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear. In Merzouga you ride a camel into the sand to watch the sunset, then spend the night in a desert camp with dinner and drumming.
After the long journey from the Atlantic, today is spent in the desert itself. It begins with sunrise over Erg Chebbi, seen from a dune close to the camp, and breakfast before a camel or 4x4 takes you back to the village.
In the late morning your driver-guide shows you the region by 4x4: Khamlia and its Gnawa musicians, the abandoned lead mines, the black desert of dark stones and a nomad family who share tea in their tent. Fossil beds and, in wet years, the flamingo lake of Dayet Srji are further stops.
Free time in the afternoon lets you rest before tomorrow's drive to Fes. The night is in a hotel at the edge of the dunes.
After breakfast in Merzouga you set off north. The Ziz Valley is the first sight, a long canyon of date palms seen from above.
You continue through the Ziz gorges and up to the high plain of Midelt, where you have lunch beneath the snowy peaks of the Atlas.
The afternoon road crosses the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, with their Barbary macaques, and passes Ifrane on the way to Fes, where you arrive in the evening.
The journey ends in Fes, with your driver taking you right to your hotel. An airport transfer or an extra night is just a message away.
Good to know
Before you go
Pickup is from your hotel in Agadir or Taghazout, or from Al Massira Airport. Departure is early, usually around 7:30 am, because the first day covers a lot of ground.
You are dropped at your riad or hotel in Fes, or at Fes-Saïss Airport. If the tour arrives in the evening, plan your flight for the next morning or later.
A different start or end point is rarely a problem. Because every tour is private, we can begin in one city and finish in another; tell us where you are staying and we will adapt the route and the quote.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons for this route. Days are warm and clear, nights are mild, and in April and May the valleys of the south are green and the roses of Kalaat M'Gouna are in bloom.
Winter is a good time for the desert if you bring warm clothes: skies are bright and the dunes are quiet, but temperatures after dark can fall to around freezing and the High Atlas passes occasionally close for a few hours after snow. In July and August the Sahara is very hot in the afternoon, so we shift the camel trek later, start driving earlier and can recommend a camp with air-cooled tents.
On the Atlantic coast, sea breezes keep Essaouira and Agadir mild all year, which makes them a welcome contrast after the heat of the interior in summer.
During Ramadan the tour runs as normal. Some restaurants close during the day in smaller towns, your driver-guide will know where to stop, and evenings are especially lively after sunset.
