Tour overview
A round trip from the capital to the Sahara in four days. You cross the Middle Atlas by Meknes, Ifrane and the cedar forests to a night in Midelt, ride a camel into the dunes of Erg Chebbi for a night in a desert camp, and return by Meknes and Roman Volubilis to your hotel in Rabat.
Our 4 Day Rabat to Merzouga Desert Tour starts and finishes in Rabat, covering about 1,270 km by road over four days. Along the way you will experience a sunset camel trek in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, a night in a desert camp, the cedar forests and Barbary macaques of the Middle Atlas and the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the gates of Meknes. Each stop is a real visit on foot, with your driver-guide explaining what you are looking at and local people adding their own stories.
Accommodation is chosen for character and location rather than size: one night in a comfortable hotel in Midelt, one night in a desert camp in the dunes of Erg Chebbi and one night in a riad or boutique hotel in Meknes. You travel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle, a 4x4 or a minibus depending on the size of your party, with an English-speaking driver-guide who knows these roads well. Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese-speaking guides are available on request.
It suits travellers who have only a few days but still want to reach the real Sahara: couples, friends, solo travellers and families with older children who are comfortable with some time in the car. The longest day on the road is day 3, with 8 hours, with stops of driving; every other day is shorter, and all of them are broken up by visits and stops. Like all our tours it is fully private, so the plan below can be lengthened, shortened or rearranged to fit your dates.
Highlights
Detailed itinerary
Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel or riad in Rabat in the morning, and you head east on the motorway through the farmland of the Gharb and the Saïss plain.
Around midday you stop in Meknes, the imperial city of Moulay Ismail, for lunch and a look at the great tiled gate of Bab Mansour. The road then climbs into the Middle Atlas to Ifrane, a mountain town of red roofs and tidy gardens, and through the cedar forest near Azrou, where Barbary macaques often come to the roadside.
In the late afternoon you cross the high, open plateau to Midelt, at the foot of the Jbel Ayachi range, and spend the night in a hotel there.
From Midelt you drive south over the Tizi n'Talghemt pass, at almost 1,900 metres, and down into the Ziz Gorges, where the river has carved a narrow red canyon through the mountains.
Beyond Errachidia the valley widens into a long ribbon of date palms and earthen villages. You pause in Erfoud, the town of fossils, before the last stretch to Merzouga on the edge of the Sahara.
In the late afternoon your camels are waiting at the foot of Erg Chebbi. You ride into the dunes as the light turns orange, watch the sunset from a crest and spend the night at your desert camp, with dinner and drumming around the fire.
Set your alarm for the sunrise over the dunes, then ride back to Merzouga for breakfast and a hot shower before the journey north begins.
The road climbs back up the palm groves of the Ziz past Erfoud and Errachidia, through the gorges and over the mountains to Midelt, where lunch comes with a view of the Jbel Ayachi peaks.
In the afternoon you cross the cedar woods near Azrou, a good place to spot macaques, and reach Meknes in the early evening for a night in a riad inside the old walls.
Your last day begins with a morning in Meknes. You walk from the monumental gate of Bab Mansour across El Hedim square and visit the royal granaries and stables built for the twelve thousand horses of Sultan Moulay Ismail.
Half an hour north lies Volubilis. With a local guide you explore the remains of this Roman town, its basilica, triumphal arch and houses paved with mosaics, set on a ridge facing the holy town of Moulay Idriss.
In the afternoon you take the motorway west to the Atlantic and are back at your hotel in Rabat in the late afternoon, where the tour ends.
Good to know
Before you go
Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel or riad in Rabat, from Rabat-Salé Airport or from Rabat Agdal station, usually at around 8:00 am. Tell us your address or arrival time when booking.
The tour ends at your hotel in Rabat. A transfer to Rabat-Salé Airport, to Casablanca or to Mohammed V Airport can be included on request.
A different start or end point is rarely a problem. Because every tour is private, we can begin in one city and finish in another; tell us where you are staying and we will adapt the route and the quote.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons for this route. Days are warm and clear, nights are mild, and in April and May the valleys of the south are green and the roses of Kalaat M'Gouna are in bloom.
Winter is a good time for the desert if you bring warm clothes: skies are bright and the dunes are quiet, but temperatures after dark can fall to around freezing and the High Atlas passes occasionally close for a few hours after snow. In July and August the Sahara is very hot in the afternoon, so we shift the camel trek later, start driving earlier and can recommend a camp with air-cooled tents.
During Ramadan the tour runs as normal. Some restaurants close during the day in smaller towns, your driver-guide will know where to stop, and evenings are especially lively after sunset.
