Six days from Rabat to Marrakech that start in the mountains.

Tour overview
Six days from Rabat to Marrakech that start in the mountains. A night in the blue town of Chefchaouen comes first, then Volubilis, Meknes and Fes, two nights in Merzouga with a camel trek and a 4x4 day around the dunes, and the kasbah road to Marrakech.
Our 6 Day Rabat to Marrakech Tour via Chefchaouen begins in Rabat and ends in Marrakech, covering about 1,660 km by road over six days. Along the way you will experience the Tizi n'Tichka pass over the High Atlas, the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, a sunset camel trek in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, a night in a desert camp, tea with nomad families and Gnawa music in Khamlia and the cedar forests and Barbary macaques of the Middle Atlas. Each stop is a real visit on foot, with your driver-guide explaining what you are looking at and local people adding their own stories.
Accommodation is chosen for character and location rather than size: 5 nights in all, in riads and boutique hotels in the medinas and old towns, kasbah-style guesthouses in the southern valleys, comfortable hotels where they suit the route better and one night in a desert camp in the dunes of Erg Chebbi. You travel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle, a 4x4 or a minibus depending on the size of your party, with an English-speaking driver-guide who knows these roads well. Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese-speaking guides are available on request.
It suits travellers who want to see more than one side of Morocco in a week or so, at a pace that leaves time to walk, take photographs and talk to people along the way. The longest day on the road is day 3, with 7.5–8 hours of driving; every other day is shorter, and all of them are broken up by visits and stops. Like all our tours it is fully private, so the plan below can be lengthened, shortened or rearranged to fit your dates.
Highlights
Detailed itinerary
Leaving Rabat after breakfast, you head north-east through the farmland of the Gharb plain towards the green hills of the Rif.
After Ouezzane, a holy town famous for its olive oil, the road climbs into the mountains, with views over valleys of cork oak and small farming villages.
You arrive in Chefchaouen in the afternoon and have time to wander its blue lanes, the main square below the red kasbah and the spring of Ras el Ma before dinner.
A morning departure takes you down from the Rif through rolling country of olive groves and wheat to Volubilis, where a local guide shows you the Roman streets, arches and mosaics.
You pass Moulay Idriss, the white holy town on its two hills, and stop in Meknes for lunch and the grand gate of Bab Mansour.
In the late afternoon you arrive in Fes and check in to your riad for the night.
An early start from Fes takes you south into the Middle Atlas, through Ifrane with its alpine chalets and the cedar woods around Azrou, home to wild Barbary macaques.
After lunch in Midelt, below the snowy Jbel Ayachi, you follow the Ziz Gorges and the green palm valley south past Errachidia and Erfoud.
By late afternoon the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi rise ahead. In Merzouga you mount your camels for the sunset ride and spend the night at a desert camp.
Wake early to watch the sunrise from the dunes, then return to Merzouga for breakfast before a day exploring the desert around Erg Chebbi by 4x4.
You visit a nomad family in their tent for tea, drive across the black stone hamada where fossils lie on the ground, and stop in Khamlia to listen to Gnawa musicians whose families came from West Africa.
In the afternoon there is time to relax at your hotel by the dunes, with dinner and a second night in Merzouga.
Leaving the dunes after breakfast, you drive west through Rissani and across the desert plateau, dotted with the mounds of old khettara wells.
In Tinghir you enter the Todra Gorge on foot and walk between its towering rock walls, with lunch at a small restaurant near the entrance.
The road then continues to Boumalne Dades and the Dades Valley, where you spend the night at a kasbah guesthouse.
Today you head west to Marrakech, stopping first in Kalaat M'Gouna, where small cooperatives make rosewater from the valley's Damascus roses, and passing the kasbahs of Skoura.
Beyond Ouarzazate you visit the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, crossing the river and climbing through its earthen alleys to the top for a wide view of the Ounila Valley.
After lunch you cross the High Atlas by the Tichka pass and descend through walnut groves and mountain hamlets to Marrakech in the early evening.
Your Moroccan journey closes this evening in Marrakech, at your hotel. We are glad to arrange a further night or your transfer to the airport.
Good to know
Before you go
Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel or riad in Rabat, from Rabat-Salé Airport or from Rabat Agdal station, usually at around 8:00 am. Tell us your address or arrival time when booking.
The tour ends at your accommodation in Marrakech or at Menara Airport. On tours that arrive in the evening, we recommend booking a flight for the following day.
A different start or end point is rarely a problem. Because every tour is private, we can begin in one city and finish in another; tell us where you are staying and we will adapt the route and the quote.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons for this route. Days are warm and clear, nights are mild, and in April and May the valleys of the south are green and the roses of Kalaat M'Gouna are in bloom.
Winter is a good time for the desert if you bring warm clothes: skies are bright and the dunes are quiet, but temperatures after dark can fall to around freezing and the High Atlas passes occasionally close for a few hours after snow. In July and August the Sahara is very hot in the afternoon, so we shift the camel trek later, start driving earlier and can recommend a camp with air-cooled tents.
The north is greener and wetter than the rest of the country. Chefchaouen and the Rif are at their best from April to June and in September and October; between November and February you should expect some rain there.
During Ramadan the tour runs as normal. Some restaurants close during the day in smaller towns, your driver-guide will know where to stop, and evenings are especially lively after sunset.
