Tour overview
The five-day crossing from Agadir to Fes with one important addition: a guided day in the Fes medina at the end. You arrive from the desert in the evening and have the whole next day to explore the tanneries, madrasas and souks with a local guide.
Our 6 Day Agadir to Fes Desert Tour begins in Agadir and ends in Fes, covering about 1,300 km by road over six days. Along the way you will experience the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, a sunset camel trek in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, a night in a desert camp, tea with nomad families and Gnawa music in Khamlia, the cedar forests and Barbary macaques of the Middle Atlas and a guided day in the medina of Fes. Each stop is a real visit on foot, with your driver-guide explaining what you are looking at and local people adding their own stories.
Accommodation is chosen for character and location rather than size: 5 nights in all, in riads and boutique hotels in the medinas and old towns, kasbah-style guesthouses in the southern valleys, comfortable hotels where they suit the route better and one night in a desert camp in the dunes of Erg Chebbi. You travel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle, a 4x4 or a minibus depending on the size of your party, with an English-speaking driver-guide who knows these roads well. Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese-speaking guides are available on request.
It suits travellers who want to see more than one side of Morocco in a week or so, at a pace that leaves time to walk, take photographs and talk to people along the way. The longest day on the road is day 5, with 7.5–8 hours of driving; every other day is shorter, and all of them are broken up by visits and stops. Like all our tours it is fully private, so the plan below can be lengthened, shortened or rearranged to fit your dates.
Highlights
Detailed itinerary
Today you leave Agadir for the mountains. The first stop is Taroudant, a quiet walled town of ochre ramparts and souks, sometimes called 'little Marrakech'.
The road continues onto the plateau between two mountain ranges to Taliouine, where saffron is grown, and Tazenakht, known for its carpets.
You reach Ait Ben Haddou in the late afternoon, with time to walk through its lanes, and spend the night nearby or in Ouarzazate.
Today you discover the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. The oasis of Skoura and its Kasbah Amridil, with bread ovens and an olive press, are the first stop.
In Kalaat M'Gouna, centre of the Valley of Roses, you can visit a rosewater cooperative and buy rose soaps and creams.
In the afternoon the Dades Gorge narrows between ochre cliffs, with the Monkey Fingers and the hairpin road above. The night is in a guesthouse by the river.
The day starts with a short drive up the Dades Gorge to the Monkey Fingers, then the road leads east to Tinghir.
In Todra Gorge you walk through the canyon beside the stream, under cliffs some 300 metres high, before lunch.
In the afternoon you cross the plateau to Erfoud, and the dunes rise ahead. A camel ride from Merzouga takes you into Erg Chebbi for sunset, followed by dinner and a night in a desert camp.
Your day in the desert begins at first light, on top of a dune, as the sun rises over Erg Chebbi. After breakfast you make your way back to Merzouga by camel or 4x4.
A 4x4 circuit then explores the area: Khamlia and its Gnawa music, the old lead mines, the stony black desert and a nomad family who welcome you with tea and dates. Your driver-guide translates and explains how the families find water and pasture.
You have the afternoon free at the hotel and spend the night by the dunes before tomorrow's drive north through the Ziz Valley to Fes.
Today you leave the desert for the imperial city of Fes. The drive begins along the Ziz Valley, where a viewpoint reveals more than a million palm trees in a deep canyon.
Past Errachidia, the Ziz gorges and the Legionnaires' Tunnel bring you to Midelt for lunch.
In the afternoon you cross the Middle Atlas through cedar forests where macaques play, stop briefly in Ifrane and arrive in Fes in the evening.
After the desert, the medieval city. Your last day is spent with a licensed guide in Fes el-Bali, a medina of thousands of lanes where nothing has four wheels. You start at Bab Boujloud and walk down the main street between bakeries, spice stalls and tiny workshops.
Highlights include a fourteenth-century madrasa decorated with tile, plaster and cedar, the doors of the Al-Qarawiyyin university, the square where coppersmiths beat out trays and cauldrons, and the leather tanneries seen from a terrace above the dye pits.
After lunch your driver shows you the Royal Palace gates, the Jewish quarter and a pottery cooperative, finishing at a viewpoint over the whole medina. The tour ends in Fes this evening.
Arrival in Fes brings our time together to a close. You are left at your hotel, and we can book a further night or the drive to your flight.
Good to know
Before you go
Pickup is from your hotel in Agadir or Taghazout, or from Al Massira Airport. Departure is early, usually around 7:30 am, because the first day covers a lot of ground.
You are dropped at your riad or hotel in Fes, or at Fes-Saïss Airport. If the tour arrives in the evening, plan your flight for the next morning or later.
A different start or end point is rarely a problem. Because every tour is private, we can begin in one city and finish in another; tell us where you are staying and we will adapt the route and the quote.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons for this route. Days are warm and clear, nights are mild, and in April and May the valleys of the south are green and the roses of Kalaat M'Gouna are in bloom.
Winter is a good time for the desert if you bring warm clothes: skies are bright and the dunes are quiet, but temperatures after dark can fall to around freezing and the High Atlas passes occasionally close for a few hours after snow. In July and August the Sahara is very hot in the afternoon, so we shift the camel trek later, start driving earlier and can recommend a camp with air-cooled tents.
On the Atlantic coast, sea breezes keep Essaouira and Agadir mild all year, which makes them a welcome contrast after the heat of the interior in summer.
During Ramadan the tour runs as normal. Some restaurants close during the day in smaller towns, your driver-guide will know where to stop, and evenings are especially lively after sunset.
