Tour overview
Starting in Ouarzazate saves the Atlas crossing and puts you straight onto the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. The route runs through the Dades and Todra gorges to a night in the dunes of Merzouga, then north across the Middle Atlas to finish in Fes.
Our 3 Day Ouarzazate to Fes Desert Tour begins in Ouarzazate and ends in Fes, covering about 860 km by road over three days. Along the way you will experience the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, a sunset camel trek in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, a night in a desert camp and the cedar forests and Barbary macaques of the Middle Atlas. Each stop is a real visit on foot, with your driver-guide explaining what you are looking at and local people adding their own stories.
Accommodation is chosen for character and location rather than size: one night in a kasbah-style guesthouse in the Dades Valley and one night in a desert camp in the dunes of Erg Chebbi. You travel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle, a 4x4 or a minibus depending on the size of your party, with an English-speaking driver-guide who knows these roads well. Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese-speaking guides are available on request.
It suits travellers who have only a few days but still want to reach the real Sahara: couples, friends, solo travellers and families with older children who are comfortable with some time in the car. The longest day on the road is day 3, with 7.5–8 hours of driving; every other day is shorter, and all of them are broken up by visits and stops. Like all our tours it is fully private, so the plan below can be lengthened, shortened or rearranged to fit your dates.
Highlights
Detailed itinerary
A relaxed day along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. The first stop is the oasis of Skoura, where you walk through the palm grove to Kasbah Amridil, a seventeenth-century fortified house that still shows how a wealthy family lived, with its bread ovens, olive press and rooftop terraces.
The road continues to Kalaat M'Gouna and the Valley of Roses. In late April and May the hedges between the fields are pink with Damask roses; at any time of year you can visit a cooperative and see how rosewater is distilled.
From Boumalne the route turns up the Dades Gorge, the valley narrowing between walls of red and ochre rock. You pass the strange eroded formations known as the Monkey Fingers and can drive up the famous switchbacks for the view back down the canyon. There is time for a walk among the gardens by the river before dinner at your guesthouse.
The morning begins with a short detour up the Dades Gorge to see the Monkey Fingers, rounded red rocks above the river, before the road turns east to Tinghir.
From Tinghir's palm grove you enter Todra Gorge, where the walls rise straight up on either side of the stream. You walk the narrowest section on foot, then stop for lunch.
The afternoon road crosses the plateau to Erfoud and Rissani, and then the dunes appear. A camel ride of about an hour and a half brings you to a high dune for sunset and on to the camp, where dinner and drumming around the fire end the day.
After a last sunrise over the dunes and breakfast, you head north. The road follows the Ziz River, and from the viewpoint above Aoufous you look down on a canyon packed with date palms and earthen villages.
Past Errachidia, the road threads through the Ziz gorges and a tunnel dug by French legionnaires, then climbs to Midelt, a town of apple orchards between two mountain ranges, where you stop for lunch.
In the afternoon you cross the Middle Atlas, through high plateaux and the cedar forest near Azrou, where Barbary macaques gather. After a short stop in Alpine-style Ifrane, you reach Fes in the evening.
With the drive to Fes the itinerary is complete: you check in to your hotel for the night, and we can add the airport transfer if you need it.
Good to know
Before you go
We collect you from your hotel in Ouarzazate or Ait Ben Haddou, or from Ouarzazate Airport, at around 8:30 am.
You are dropped at your riad or hotel in Fes, or at Fes-Saïss Airport. If the tour arrives in the evening, plan your flight for the next morning or later.
A different start or end point is rarely a problem. Because every tour is private, we can begin in one city and finish in another; tell us where you are staying and we will adapt the route and the quote.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons for this route. Days are warm and clear, nights are mild, and in April and May the valleys of the south are green and the roses of Kalaat M'Gouna are in bloom.
Winter is a good time for the desert if you bring warm clothes: skies are bright and the dunes are quiet, but temperatures after dark can fall to around freezing and the High Atlas passes occasionally close for a few hours after snow. In July and August the Sahara is very hot in the afternoon, so we shift the camel trek later, start driving earlier and can recommend a camp with air-cooled tents.
During Ramadan the tour runs as normal. Some restaurants close during the day in smaller towns, your driver-guide will know where to stop, and evenings are especially lively after sunset.
