Overview

Morocco’s Modern City, Explained

Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco and its economic capital: wide boulevards, white Art Deco facades from the 1920s and 1930s, a busy port and a long Atlantic seafront. It is not a museum city, which is exactly why a guide helps: the interest is in the details.

The tour begins in the centre, around Mohammed V Square and its public buildings, and continues past the palm avenues of the Arab League Park to the Habous, the “new medina” built in the 1930s in traditional style, with its arcades, bookshops and pastry shops. The highlight is the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest in the world and one of the few in Morocco that non-Muslims can enter, on a guided visit. You finish along the Corniche of Ain Diab, facing the ocean.

Start

Mohammed V Square and the Art Deco centre

Your guide and driver meet you at your hotel, the port or the airport and begin in the heart of the city, where the courthouse, the old post office and the fountains frame Mohammed V Square.

Casablanca grew from a small port into a metropolis in a few decades of the 20th century, and its centre is one of the best collections of Art Deco and “Neo-Moorish” architecture anywhere. Look up: the balconies, ironwork and tiled friezes are the pleasure of this walk.

Arab League Park

A short drive brings you to the city’s main park, with its long avenues of palms and, beside it, the white former cathedral of the Sacré-Cœur.

The park was laid out in the 1910s and reopened after a full restoration. The Sacré-Cœur is no longer used as a church and is seen from outside.

The Habous quarter

You walk under the arcades of the Habous, the “new medina” of the 1930s, among bookshops, olive stalls, craft shops and bakeries, and pass the gates of the Royal Palace.

The Habous was designed by French architects with Moroccan craftsmen as a planned district in traditional style. It is the best place in the city to buy pastries, olives, leather slippers and brassware without pressure.

The Hassan II Mosque

The visit everyone comes for: a guided tour inside the mosque, built partly over the Atlantic, with its vast prayer hall, carved cedar, marble and hand-cut zellige.

The mosque was completed in 1993. Its minaret rises about 210 metres, the prayer hall holds 25,000 worshippers and part of the building stands over the sea. Visits are at fixed hours, outside prayer times, with an official mosque guide; tickets are bought on site.

The Corniche of Ain Diab

The tour ends along the seafront, past the lighthouse of El Hank and the beach clubs of Ain Diab, with time for a coffee facing the waves before your drop-off.

If your flight or ship leaves later in the day, the tour can end with lunch by the ocean. Cinema lovers can ask to add a stop at the café recreated from the film “Casablanca”.
