Agadir: Morocco’s Ocean Escape
A wide sandy bay with year-round sunshine, surf villages to the north and the argan country behind: the relaxed side of Morocco.
Destination overview
The Essence of Agadir
Agadir was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1960 as a modern resort city, and it is different from anywhere else in Morocco: a long crescent of sand, a palm-lined promenade, a marina and a mild climate that barely changes through the year. Above the bay, the ruins of the old kasbah, Agadir Oufella, look out over the port and the ocean.
North of the city the coast road leads to Taghazout, a fishing village that has become one of the best-known surf spots in Africa. Inland are the argan groves of the Souss, where goats climb the trees and women’s cooperatives press the oil. Agadir also works well as the start or end of a longer trip, with Essaouira up the coast, Marrakech three hours away and roads east through Taroudant and Taliouine to the Sahara.

Frequently asked questions
Agadir Travel Guide: Frequently Asked Questions
How many days should I spend in Agadir?
Two or three days suit most travellers: time for the beach, a trip up the coast to Taghazout and a visit to an argan cooperative. Many guests add Agadir to the end of a tour to rest by the ocean.
What is the best time to visit Agadir?
Any time. Temperatures usually stay between about 20°C and 27°C by day throughout the year. Winter has the best surf, and in summer the coast is cooler than Marrakech.
Can I visit the Sahara from Agadir?
Yes, but it is a long way: the dunes of Merzouga are about two days’ drive east. Our desert tours from Agadir start at four days and travel through Taroudant, Taliouine and the valleys of the south.
Is Agadir good for families?
Very. The bay is wide and sandy, the promenade is flat and traffic-free, and hotels are used to children. Choose supervised sections of the beach for swimming.
Is Agadir safe for visitors?
Yes. Agadir is used to welcoming travellers and serious problems are rare. Take the same care you would anywhere: keep valuables out of sight in busy places and agree prices in advance. On a private tour your driver-guide is with you throughout the journey.
Can you include Agadir in a private tour?
Yes. Agadir features in many of our private tours, and every itinerary can be adjusted. Tell us how long you would like to stay and we will build the route around it.
