Tour overview
A one-way week of birding from Fes to Marrakech that follows the classic route south. The cedars and the Zeida plains give Atlas Pied Flycatcher and Dupont's Lark, Merzouga the desert specialities of Erg Chebbi, the Todra Gorge and the Tagdilt track their cliff birds and larks, and the High Atlas a final morning at Oukaimeden.
Our 7 Day Fes to Marrakech Birding Tour begins in Fes and ends in Marrakech, covering about 1,360 km by road over seven days. Along the way you will experience the Tizi n'Tichka pass over the High Atlas, the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, a sunset camel trek in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, a night in a desert camp, the cedar forests and Barbary macaques of the Middle Atlas and the desert birds of Erg Chebbi, from Desert Sparrow to Pharaoh Eagle-Owl. Each stop is a real visit on foot, with your driver-guide explaining what you are looking at and local people adding their own stories.
Accommodation is chosen for character and location rather than size: 6 nights in all, in kasbah-style guesthouses in the southern valleys, comfortable hotels where they suit the route better and one night in a desert camp in the dunes of Erg Chebbi. You travel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle, a 4x4 or a minibus depending on the size of your party, with an English-speaking driver-guide who knows these roads well. Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese-speaking guides are available on request.
It is planned for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers, from keen beginners to experienced listers, and for their travelling companions: days start early and follow the rhythm of the birds, with long stops at the best sites and time to rest in the heat of the day. The longest day on the road is day 2, with 5 hours plus birding stops of driving; every other day is shorter, and all of them are broken up by visits and stops. Like all our tours it is fully private, so the plan below can be lengthened, shortened or rearranged to fit your dates.
Highlights
Detailed itinerary
Your driver-guide meets you in Fes and you climb into the Middle Atlas by Ifrane. In the cedar forest near Azrou you walk among the trees for Levaillant's Woodpecker, Atlas Pied Flycatcher in season, Firecrest and Coal Tit, and meet the Barbary macaques.
In the late afternoon you reach the Zeida plains, where you listen at dusk for the song of Dupont's Lark and look for Thekla and Lesser Short-toed Larks.
Your hotel for the night is in Midelt, a short drive from the plains, beneath the snowy ridge of Jbel Ayachi.
An early return to the Zeida plains gives a second chance for Dupont's Lark before breakfast.
The drive south through the Ziz Gorges and Valley passes from steppe to palm groves, with Thekla and Desert Larks, Blue Rock Thrush and the first White-crowned Wheatears along the way.
You reach Merzouga in the afternoon, leave the vehicle at the edge of the sand and continue by camel, arriving at your camp in time to watch the sun set from a dune top. Dinner is served around the campfire, followed by drumming from the camp staff, and the night is spent in a mid-range luxury desert camp (luxury camp on request).
A full day in the Sahara around Erg Chebbi and Rissani. In the scrub at the edge of the dunes you look for African Desert Warbler, Desert Sparrow and Fulvous Babbler, while Bar-tailed Larks and Brown-necked Ravens are at home on the open sand.
Around Rissani the hamada and palm groves add Desert Wheatear, Greater Hoopoe-Lark and, in spring, migrants resting in the oases.
As evening comes you stay out for Pharaoh Eagle-Owl and, in season, Egyptian Nightjar.
Heading west, you stop in the scrub near Goulmima for Tristram's Warbler, then walk into the Todra Gorge for Crag Martin, Blue Rock Thrush and perhaps Bonelli's Eagle.
In the late afternoon you make a first visit to the Tagdilt track, where Thick-billed Lark and Red-rumped Wheatear are among the targets.
You spend the night in Boumalne Dades.
A second, early session on the Tagdilt track, when the larks sing at sunrise, often fills the gaps in your lark list.
Driving west, you watch for Maghreb Wheatear on the rocky slopes and stop at the El Mansour Eddahbi reservoir, where Marbled Duck, Ruddy Shelduck and herons may be present.
You check in to a kasbah-style hotel in Ouarzazate.
In the morning you visit Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO ksar, where House Buntings and Crag Martins nest in the earthen walls.
Crossing the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka, you stop on the slopes for Moussier's Redstart, Barbary Partridge and Tristram's Warbler, then descend towards the Ourika Valley.
You spend the night in the valley, close to the woods where Levaillant's Woodpecker lives.
An early walk in the Ourika woods gives the best chance of Levaillant's Woodpecker, before you drive up to the plateau of Oukaimeden.
The finale is high in the mountains, with Crimson-winged Finch, Rock Sparrow, Alpine Chough and, from spring, Atlas (Seebohm's) Wheatear among the targets.
In the afternoon you descend to Marrakech, where your driver drops you at your hotel or Menara Airport.
Good to know
Before you go
Pickup is from your riad or hotel in Fes, or from Fes-Saïss Airport, at around 8:00 am. For riads inside the medina, your driver meets you at the closest gate.
The tour ends at your accommodation in Marrakech or at Menara Airport. On tours that arrive in the evening, we recommend booking a flight for the following day.
A different start or end point is rarely a problem. Because every tour is private, we can begin in one city and finish in another; tell us where you are staying and we will adapt the route and the quote.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons for this route. Days are warm and clear, nights are mild, and in April and May the valleys of the south are green and the roses of Kalaat M'Gouna are in bloom.
Winter is a good time for the desert if you bring warm clothes: skies are bright and the dunes are quiet, but temperatures after dark can fall to around freezing and the High Atlas passes occasionally close for a few hours after snow. In July and August the Sahara is very hot in the afternoon, so we shift the camel trek later, start driving earlier and can recommend a camp with air-cooled tents.
During Ramadan the tour runs as normal. Some restaurants close during the day in smaller towns, your driver-guide will know where to stop, and evenings are especially lively after sunset.
