Five days is the point at which a desert tour from Marrakech stops feeling like a drive and starts feeling like a stay.

Tour overview
Five days is the point at which a desert tour from Marrakech stops feeling like a drive and starts feeling like a stay. A whole day is kept for Merzouga itself, to explore the edges of Erg Chebbi by 4x4, share tea with a nomad family and rest, and the return is made in two easy stages.
Our 5 Day Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour starts and finishes in Marrakech, covering about 1,200 km by road over five days. Along the way you will experience the Tizi n'Tichka pass over the High Atlas, the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, a sunset camel trek in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, a night in a desert camp, tea with nomad families and Gnawa music in Khamlia and the palm groves of the Draa Valley. Each stop is a real visit on foot, with your driver-guide explaining what you are looking at and local people adding their own stories.
Accommodation is chosen for character and location rather than size: one night in a kasbah-style guesthouse in the Dades Valley, one night in a desert camp in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, one night in a comfortable hotel in Merzouga and one night in a riad or boutique hotel in Ouarzazate or Ait Ben Haddou. You travel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle, a 4x4 or a minibus depending on the size of your party, with an English-speaking driver-guide who knows these roads well. Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese-speaking guides are available on request.
It suits travellers who have only a few days but still want to reach the real Sahara: couples, friends, solo travellers and families with older children who are comfortable with some time in the car. The longest day on the road is day 1, with 6–7 hours of driving; every other day is shorter, and all of them are broken up by visits and stops. Like all our tours it is fully private, so the plan below can be lengthened, shortened or rearranged to fit your dates.
Highlights
Detailed itinerary
Leaving Marrakech after breakfast, you climb into the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka, the highest major pass in Morocco, past villages built from the red earth of the mountains.
On the southern side you visit Ait Ben Haddou, crossing the river and walking up through the ksar to its hilltop granary, then have lunch nearby.
In the afternoon, after a photo stop in Ouarzazate, you drive along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through Skoura and the Valley of Roses to the Dades Valley for the night.
After breakfast in the valley, a detour up the Dades Gorge shows you its famous Monkey Fingers before you drive east to Tinghir.
In Todra Gorge the cliffs close in on both sides of the river, and you walk through the narrowest part on foot before lunch.
The afternoon road leads past Erfoud to Merzouga, where camels carry you into Erg Chebbi for sunset from the top of a dune. The night is spent in a desert camp, with dinner and drumming by the fire.
Your second day in Merzouga starts with the best show the desert offers: sunrise over Erg Chebbi, watched from a high dune in the cool morning air. Breakfast follows in the camp, and a camel or a 4x4 brings you back to the village.
Once you have showered, a 4x4 excursion shows you the world around the dunes. Khamlia's Gnawa musicians welcome you with drums and song, and further on the track crosses the black desert to the tent of a nomad family, where you share tea and hear how they move with their flocks. Abandoned lead mines and fossil-rich rocks add to the picture.
The afternoon can be lazy or active: the hotel pool, a sandboard, or a quad bike. You spend the night at the foot of the dunes.
After your second night in the desert, enjoy the sunrise, ride back across the dunes and have breakfast in Merzouga.
You return west by the southern route, through Rissani, Alnif with its fossils and the acacia plains of Tazzarine. At Nkob, dozens of earthen kasbahs stand below the volcanic Jbel Saghro, and lunch is nearby.
In the afternoon the road enters the Draa Valley, follows its palm groves to Agdz and climbs the Tizi n'Tinififft, with wide views, before you reach Ouarzazate for the night.
Today's drive is short enough to leave time for visits. In Ouarzazate, the Taourirt Kasbah shows how the Glaoui pashas lived, and the Atlas Film Studios display sets from decades of filming.
Then comes Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar, ideally before the tour buses arrive. You cross the river on stepping stones or the bridge, climb through the lanes and reach the granary on the summit for a view across the valley.
In the afternoon you cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka, stopping at viewpoints and perhaps at an argan cooperative, and arrive in Marrakech before evening.
Your trip finishes this evening in Marrakech with a drop-off at your hotel. Just ask if you want us to plan a further night or the drive to the airport.
Good to know
Before you go
We collect you from your riad or hotel in Marrakech, or from Menara Airport, at around 8:00 am. In the medina, where cars cannot reach every door, your driver meets you at the nearest gate and helps with luggage.
The tour ends at your accommodation in Marrakech or at Menara Airport. On tours that arrive in the evening, we recommend booking a flight for the following day.
A different start or end point is rarely a problem. Because every tour is private, we can begin in one city and finish in another; tell us where you are staying and we will adapt the route and the quote.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons for this route. Days are warm and clear, nights are mild, and in April and May the valleys of the south are green and the roses of Kalaat M'Gouna are in bloom.
Winter is a good time for the desert if you bring warm clothes: skies are bright and the dunes are quiet, but temperatures after dark can fall to around freezing and the High Atlas passes occasionally close for a few hours after snow. In July and August the Sahara is very hot in the afternoon, so we shift the camel trek later, start driving earlier and can recommend a camp with air-cooled tents.
During Ramadan the tour runs as normal. Some restaurants close during the day in smaller towns, your driver-guide will know where to stop, and evenings are especially lively after sunset.
