Overview
The Story of a City Rebuilt by the Sea
Agadir looks young, and it is: on the night of 29 February 1960 an earthquake destroyed almost the whole town, and the modern city of wide avenues and white buildings was rebuilt around its bay. Its history survives in a few places, and this half-day tour takes you to the best of them with a local guide, together with the market where the people of the Souss do their shopping.
You begin on the hill of Agadir Oufella, where the walls of the sixteenth-century kasbah overlook the port and the whole curve of the beach, below the giant Arabic inscription “God, Country, King”. Next comes Souk El Had, a walled market of thousands of stalls, then the Medina of Agadir, a new old town built with traditional crafts, and finally Crocoparc, a botanical park east of the city where some three hundred Nile crocodiles live among pools, cacti and tropical gardens.

Start
Agadir Oufella
Your guide and driver collect you from your hotel and drive up the hill of Agadir Oufella, where the restored walls of the old kasbah look over the port, the marina and the long beach.
The kasbah was built in the sixteenth century to watch over the bay and was largely destroyed in the 1960 earthquake; only its walls and gate remain. A cable car now runs up from the town if you prefer to arrive by air.
- Hotel pickup
- Kasbah walls
- View over the bay

Next
Souk El Had
Back in town, you enter Souk El Had through one of its gates and wander the alleys of spices, olives, fruit, argan oil, leather and pottery with your guide.
Souk El Had is one of the largest markets in Morocco, enclosed by walls with many gates. It is busiest on Sundays and closed on Mondays.
- Spice and fruit stalls
- Argan oil and crafts
- Local market life

Then
The Medina of Agadir
A short drive south brings you to the Medina of Agadir, a walled village of earth, stone and wood built by craftsmen, with workshops of mosaic, carpentry and jewellery.
The Medina of Agadir was created from the 1990s by an Italian-born artist and local craftsmen, using the traditional building methods of southern Morocco.
- Earthen walls and gates
- Craft workshops
- Courtyards and gardens

Finally
Crocoparc
The tour ends east of the city at Crocoparc, where paths and bridges lead past pools full of Nile crocodiles and through gardens of cacti, palms and tropical plants, before your drop-off.
Crocoparc opened in 2016 in Drarga, about fifteen kilometres from the city centre. Besides the crocodiles, its gardens have hundreds of plant species, from cacti to tropical trees.
- Nile crocodiles
- Botanical gardens
- Drop-off at your hotel
This is a private experience, so times and stops can be adjusted to your arrival, your pace and the season.
