Overview
First Light Over the Dunes
The desert is at its quietest just before sunrise. The sand is cool, the air is still and the only sound is the soft step of the camels. Your guide collects you while it is still dark and leads you into Erg Chebbi by the light of the stars or the moon.
You reach a high dune as the horizon begins to glow. Within minutes the sky turns pink, then gold, and the shadows of the dunes stretch away to the west. It is the best light of the day for photographs, and by the time you ride back the village is waking and breakfast is waiting.

Before dawn
An early start under the stars
Your guide comes for you about an hour before sunrise, while the village is still asleep. You mount by torchlight and set off with the last stars above you.
Desert nights are cold from November to March, so bring a jacket and something to cover your ears. If you are staying in a desert camp, the ride simply starts from the camp instead of the village.
- Pickup at your hotel or camp
- Warm layer recommended

First light
A quiet ride through the dunes
This is the calmest hour of the desert: no wind, no heat and almost no sound except the camels’ steps. The sky slowly turns from deep blue to pink.
Because almost nobody is out at this hour, you often have the dunes to yourselves. Look down as well as up: beetles, foxes and desert birds leave fresh tracks in the sand every night.
- About 30–40 minutes of riding

Sunrise
Watch the day begin
From a high dune you see the sun rise over the Algerian horizon and the sand change colour minute by minute. Take your time; nobody is in a hurry at this hour.
The sun appears over the flat plateau on the Algerian side, and for a few minutes every dune has one gold face and one in shadow. This is the moment photographers come to Erg Chebbi for.
- Sunrise viewpoint
- Time for photos

Morning
Return for breakfast
You ride back in the soft morning light and arrive at your hotel or camp with the whole day still ahead of you.
Most travellers continue their journey the same morning towards the Todra Gorge, Fes or Marrakech, and the timing of this ride is planned so that you can leave on schedule.
- Return ride
This is a private experience, so times and stops can be adjusted to your arrival, your pace and the season.
